River Of Time Exhibit
Teachers at any grade level are invited to bring their classes to the Museum to learn local history with a tour of the permanent exhibit, River of Time. This exhibit is a chronological and thematic overview beginning with our earliest Native American inhabitants up to the whitewater rafting events during the Atlanta Olympics. The tour is approximately one-hour long and is artifact-based highlighting five key areas in Cleveland’s history. Available for grades 2nd and above.
Cherokee History Tour
All grade levels can enjoy this hands-on history tour. We will start in the permanent exhibit with the pre-history Native American story, then move through time from the influx of white settlers to the Removal and up to present day. This tour is designed for those groups NOT continuing on to Red Clay State Park, as it duplicates some of the information from their program.
Red Clay/River of Time Combination Tour
Students can get the best of all worlds with a full day of learning between the two sites. We recommend that you start your day with us and the River of Time tour, which includes an introduction to the Cherokee experience in East Tennessee. Then travel to Red Clay State Park and lunch in their beautiful grounds and enjoy a fascinating and informative program on the Cherokee people. We can coordinate the whole day for you, and there is no additional cost for the Red Clay portion.
Appalachian Days – November 8-16, 2011:
This popular interactive education program gives 4th grade students an opportunity to learn about the different aspects of life in the southern Appalachian region during the early settlement period of 1830-1840. It is designed to meet the 4th grade Tennessee curriculum standards and includes many hands-on learning projects. From butter makings, to learning how to barter at the General Store, to playing old-fashioned games and singing songs, this is an experience your kids won’t forget!
Civil War Exposition and Living History Show – February 7, 2012:
Living Historians, Steve and Alison Gipson present the causes, conflicting
policies, and aftermaths of the War Between the States in an unforgettable two-person performance that is both educational and fun. The drama comes to life through authentic Civil War costumes and artifacts. This is most appropriate for grades 5 and 8. Three performances are held throughout the day at 8:30, 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
